Emergency Plan

Your family may want to develop an plan in advance to be prepared for an actual emergency. The first thing would be to identify what storm shelter is available to you and prepare an evacuation plan.

If you do not have access to a shelter you should make yourself familiar with the local public emergency shelters available in your area. Local emergency management or law enforcement will provide shelter information upon request.

Severe weather can develop vary rapidly, at times with little or no warning. Talk with your family about how to stay safe during severe weather before it happen's.

Have a predetermined safe area within your home for all family members to meet. Also have an alternate site planed in case you cannot return home.

Disaster prevention includes modifying your home to strengthen it against storms so that you can be as safe as possible. It also includes having the supplies on hand to weather the storm. The suggestions provided here are only guides. You should use common sense in your disaster prevention.

Make a plan for your pets. Not all emergency shelters will take pets.

A basement is generally the safest option if one is available. Go downstairs and take shelter under something sturdy, cover your self with a mattress or sleeping bag.

Be prepared with an Emergency Preparedness Kit. Remember to start with the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.

  • Water - Be sure to avoid containers such as milk cartons or glass bottles
  • Light - Do not use candles or any other open flame for lighting.
  • Radio -Battery powered or hand crank, also a NOAA Weather Radio and extra batteries for both.
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Food - Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking, and little or no water. such as Ready-to-eat canned meals, meats, fruits, and vegetables; Canned juices; and High-energy foods (energy bars,granola bars,etc.).
  • First Aid Kit and Medications including non-prescription medications you take, pain relievers, stomach remedies, dust mask, etc.
  • Paper plates and cups, plastic utensils, Non-electric can opener, extra batteries.
  • Personal hygiene items, Plastic garbage bags, ties (for personal sanitation uses) Include at least one complete change of clothing and footwear, including a long sleeved shirt and long pants, as well as closed-toed shoes or boots. A cell phone.
  • Your kit should be adjusted based on your own personal needs.
