Welcome to Kansas Vortex

Pictures of weather and other stuff...

We started photographing storms and lightning around 1996, back in the day of the 35mm. We would usually wait for the storms to come our way and shoot locally in the SE Kansas area. Now we travel all over the great plains region in search of severe weather.

We are going to be chasing this 2012 storm season so be sure to follow us on Twitter and look us up on Facebook.

We are currently members of The Spotter Network and have set a goal to observe and report severe weather, helping warn the public through the National Weather Service.

Along with pictures and videos, you will find our site contains information on severe weather and tornadoes. Most of the photography on this site is for sale, either matted or framed and ready to hang. Please check out the secure purchasing page for further details..

This year we will once again be streaming live chase video with Severe Studios, so check out our live feed on active chase day's.

Thunderstorms develop in warm, moist air in advance of eastward-moving cold fronts. These thunderstorms often produce large hail, strong winds, and tornadoes. Tornadoes in the winter and early spring are often associated with strong, frontal systems that form in the Central States and move east. Occasionally, large outbreaks of tornadoes occur with this type of weather pattern. Several states may be affected by numerous severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.
